Hans Janitschek has been a trustee of the Friends World College, New York, where he initiated the Martin Luther King Jr. International Peace Award, which was presented to Mikhail Gorbachev, amongst others, in Washington DC. He is also a fellow of Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri, and a board member of the International Institute for Social History in Amsterdam.

Biographical/historical note : Born in Vienna 1934; journalist, active in the international social democratic movement; law student in Vienna and the USA; returned in 1954 to Austria and became a journalist for Reuter's and various Austrian newspapers; entered the diplomatic service as Austrian press attaché to the UN in New York in 1964; returned to Austria to become adviser to Bruno Pittermann in 1965 on the subjects of journalism and propaganda; secretary-general of the Socialist International (SI) 1969-1977; special assistant to the Assistant Secretary-General for Public Information of the UN 1977-1982; member of the board of the International Institute of Social History (IISH), Amsterdam from 1974.

UNCA and the UNITED NATIONS SOCIETY OF WRITERS & ARTISTS, in their desire to promote the highest standard of excellence in political cartoons depicting the spirit and principles of the United Nations, have established this annual political cartoon award given in the international field, and named the award after political cartoonist Ranan Lurie.
We have named this award after Mr. Lurie, as we find that his political cartoons epitomize the high standards that we at the UNCA and THE UNITED NATIONS SOCIETY OF WRITERS & ARTISTS, would like to see.
